Using audio recordings, video clips, comics, and images projected on screen, a team of obstetricians and gynecologists conducted a symposium on teen sexual health issues to teenage students of UP Visayas Cebu College (UPVCC).
UPVCC's junior and senior high school students and National Service Training Program (NSTP) students attended the symposium held by the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (POGS) Foundation, Inc. in the morning of July 25, 2008, at the UPVCC Conference Room.
Dr. Belinda Pañares, Dr. Gladys Pelicano, Dr. Humility Igaña, Dr.
Pherdes Galbo, and Dr. Marilou Mangubat—all members of
POGS-Cebu—discussed adolescent reproductive anatomy and physiology,
myths and misconceptions about sex and reproduction, the effects of
premarital sex, and possible steps for guidance and intervention.
Twenty-two UPV Cebu High School (UPVCHS) alumni from various batches delivered informational and motivational talks last July 14 to 17, 2008, to present various career opportunities that UPVCHS students can take after graduating from high school. The lectures were held at the UP Visayas Cebu College Conference Hall from 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.
"With the career talks, hopefully, you'll be able to open up to the different careers you can actually choose," Purita Baltazar, principal, told the audience at the closing ceremony.
Baltazar also urged the students to choose the career that they really love. "As long as you love your profession, it's no longer a job," she said.
The four-day series of career talks was organized by the high school alumni as part of their week-long grand reunion and celebration of the UP Centennial Year.
When they were still students, UP Visayas Cebu High School (UPVCHS) alumni heard the ringing of the bell, and they knew class was about to start. In the morning of July 12, 2008, they themselves rang bells—to signal the start of a week-long series of activities for the grand alumni reunion.
Using a bronze bell, UP Cebu High School Alumni Association Interim Board of Trustees President Dionisio Auza, Jr. (Class 1975) led the Ceremonial Ringing of the Bells simultaneously with High School Principal Prof. Purita Baltazar, who rang the school bell to signal the formal opening of the UP Cebu High School Grand Alumni Reunion 2008 week.
After the opening program, the alumni cast their footprints on cement in a rite the organizers referred to as "Tunob" (footprint). May Christina "Micmic" Bugash (Class 1989), one of the brains behind the preparations for the reunion, explained that the footprint casts will be used for the Tunob Walk in the new high school building. She also said that the theme is an apt one for the alumni, since, as alumni, they have left footprints in the high school and the high school has left footprints in their souls.
About 200 alumni from 1975 to 2008 joined the opening day festivities.
About 20 UP Visayas Cebu High School (UPVCHS) alumni from Class 1983, and UPVCHS faculty and students held the first-ever Teofilo B. Lutao Inter-High School Math Quiz Bowl at the UP Visayas Cebu College Conference Hall last July 11, 2008.
The math contest was named after former UPVCHS math professor Teofilo B. Lutao, whom the batch considered their best math teacher.
Towards the end of the contest, the Class of 1983 also formally turned
over to the high school their donation of two Elmo Digital Visual
Presenters, two sets of desktop computers, and two computer printers.

opponents in the Second Philippine Amazing Race in Cyberspace organized
by the Computer Manufacturers, Distributors, and Dealers Association of
the Philippines (COMDDAP) last July 3 to 5, 2008, at the Trade Hall of
SM City-Cebu.
"We were ahead of the other teams by 22 seconds, and we needed to find
the last place—Hong Kong Convention Center—before the other
participants could." Thus, recounted Jay Arnel Bilocura about the
final moments before their team's victory in the online contest.
Bilocura, along with Christine Toledo and Niña Kathryn Alfeche,
composed the only high school team in the online race.

Arroyo, herself a UP alumna and former faculty member, expressed in
her speech her great pleasure in signing into law "what will confer on
our alma mater the enhanced capability to fulfill its mission and
spread the benefits of knowledge to our people."
She also described UP as the training ground of the country's top
leaders in government, pillars of business and various professions, and
a great number of intellectuals.

A team of 12 neophytes, 9 sophomores, and 2 seniors has published the results of its collaborative project on the tuba, a native beverage made from the sap of coconut flowers.
The team's website entitled "Tuba: A Cebuano Toast to Life" is UPV Cebu High School's official entry to this year's International Schools Cyberfair Competition, under the local specialties category.
With the full support of the high school faculty, staff, and
Parents-Teachers Association, the Cyberfair team was able to launch
the site on schedule. The site's URL is http://cyberfair.uphighschoolcebu.edu.ph
For the first time, the first year students (aged 12-13 years) were
the ones assigned to take a major role in the implementation of the
collaborative project. They interviewed, researched, and wrote articles about the project's topic: the tuba.
In the recently held Student Council (SC) elections last March 14, 2008, incoming senior student Stacey Kay Fortuna won the SC presidency, leaving behind fellow contender Rowela Aguillon by 21 votes. MC Cherry Ann de Leon won the vice-president's seat over fellow aspirant Dan Clever Gigantone by 39 votes.
Fortuna, who will be installed into office next school year, foresees a lot of challenges and changes not only in the campus cleanliness but also in the discipline of the students. Meanwhile, a very grateful Chic Madonna Tambagan, outgoing SC president, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to hone her potentials, to experience being of service to the school, and to learn the true essence of excellence, service, and leadership.
Two political parties vied for the different positions in the Council: LIFE (Leaders in Full Energy) and ACTS (Alliance of Concerned and Transformed Students). ACTS will be forming the majority of the positions in the Council, though, as 6 of the 9 elective positions were won by ACTS.
